Amnesty International USA

Program Summary

Across the globe we are witnessing an unprecedented rise in online organizing for on the ground social change. Young people are often on the frontlines of this change, but are seldom provided with the skills to navigate the web and social media for maximizing local organizing. Amnesty International USA Student Activist Coordinator programs looks to change that tide. Over the course of the summer, we invite youth leaders to join us in “The Time Is Now” activism institutes where youth will learn the skills and be provided with the resources to train their peers in online organizing and on the ground social change for human rights. Each participant in the regional trainings will further develop online organizing skills, expand their knowledge of pressing human rights issues, learn how to recruit, train, and support other student leaders, as well as organize effective activities that will promote human rights.

Over 100 youth leaders from across the country will be trained during the summer and supported throughout the school year as they then train more than 5000 student leaders in high schools and college campuses across the country. We will be bringing in social media and web experts to support youth leadership skills online and how youth can connect with other human rights leaders using our internal web applications in the Amnesty network. Amnesty is a trusted source for information; we have many decades of experience in mentoring activists in best practices and now taking this to the on-line realm.

Agenda

Student Activist Coordinator Trainings: “The Time Is Now”
Youth leaders will be gathering at regional hubs for a three day activism institute entitled “The Time Is Now.” These trainings provide a unique platform for young leaders (age 14-25) across the country to raise their voices, take action and lead on pressing human rights issues. Youth activists will learn about Amnesty’s work, train to become effective human rights leaders, and have the opportunity to meet and share experiences with others committed to human rights work (including local, national and international leaders and activists). More specifically they will have the opportunity to design and build state based actions that will lead to human rights change. Each component of the agenda is designed as building blocks for the year ahead as each participant is tasked with training others and being an advocate for human rights.
On the first day they will learn the key elements of organizing online and offline. They will be working in teams to carry out online and on the ground strategies for building a movement for human rights. Working closely with Amnesty’s experienced staff, these youth leaders will emerge from The Time Is Now activist institutes ready to organize in the ever changing online world and in their local communities.
