AgConnect: Linking Farmlife, Career Exploration, & Extended Learning

AgConnect: Linking Farmlife, Career Exploration, & Extended Learning

Southeast Missouri State University

Program Summary

The number of minority-owned farms has reduced significantly in the past decade. This has resulted in the migration of African Americans from their farms to residences within rural townships or to urban America. Those residing in rural southeast Missouri communities live with limited social and economic resources, and have poor access to 21st century technology. Where access is present, youth receive no training in the responsible use of this technology. What’s more, they are unaware how access and understanding of the technology may be connected to viable careers.
Our goal is to educate local minority youth and the greater digital community about the benefits of a farming lifestyle while simultaneously exposing youth to career exploration opportunities in fields related to the mass media industry. To accomplish this, we propose AgConnect, a collaborative program between Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), Lincoln University (Mo.) Cooperative Extension (LUCE), media professionals, and minority youth.
AgConnect participants will receive two days of intensive training in the art of multimedia storytelling prior to the LUCE Youth Agriculture Camp, a three-day event related to the theme of Missouri agriculture scheduled for July 30-31, 2013. During that camp, AgConnect participants will work under the guidance of adult mentors and peers to digitally memorialize active learning experiences, and for a week afterwards they will work to repackage and distribute those stories via a student-designed website using blogs, videos, and other forms of digital storytelling that increase knowledge about agricultural careers and opportunities and promote healthy lifestyles and economic well-being in rural communities.
AgConnect will meet July 29-August 7, 2013, at the SEMO satellite campus in Sikeston, Mo. The multimedia camp will target 15 underserved youth ages 12-18 who are interested in developing or improving their skills in digital storytelling.
