Software Literacy Foundation

Program Summary

The Software Literacy Foundation is dedicated to educating and inspiring disadvantaged youth to pursue a career in software development. The Foundation provides each student with a portable computer and engages them in a experiential, feedback-intensive introductory course in fundamental object-oriented programming. The curriculum is based on the Python programming language, instructing students on essential programming principles and use of standard software libraries. Each student is challenged to explore and create programs in a supportive, collaborative classroom environment with expert guidance from a professional software developer. Upon completion, the student will have the ability to independently design and create programs to solve useful problems. Students whom successfully complete the course have the computer donated to them as a resource for continued development and maturation. These students, most of whom have no computer resources in the home, have earned a valuable technological resource, a personal laptop computer, and have gained valuable exposure and experience in computer programming, effectively bridging the digital divide.
